Learning Aim A:

Core Assessment:

Music Video:

Analysis:
In Shawn Mendes' "Stitches" music video, which was released in 2015, the use of medium close up mixed with the use of low Focal Length connotes that Shawn Mendes wants the main focus to be on him.

The use of a low Focal Length connotes that less background is shown. So, by this knowledge, I can infer that they have used a focal length of around 80mm- 100mm because Shawn Mendes is the sole purpose of the video.

The use of medium close up connotes that Shawn Mendes would like to indicate to his audience that he is in some sort of pain as throughout the music video, we as the audience can visually signify that he is slowly but gradually getting in pain.
In the first 30 seconds, all the audience can see is a mixture of Tilting and a Wide angle. This connotes that Shawn Mendes wants to set the scene by allowing the camera to view his surroundings and how he has entered his surroundings.
Throughout the music video, we see times when Shawn Mendes falls onto the floor by a mysterious void. When he does fall onto the floor, we see that, when slow motion effect has taken place, The camera slightly Tilts down. This connotes that Shawn Mendes wants his audience to sympathise with his emotions
In some points of the Music Video, we are seen in front of Shawn Mendes, giving it a Point Of View angle. This connotes that Shawn Mendes wants his audience to be a part of his music video to symbolise a connection between him and his fans.

By this knowledge, I can infer that single camera production has taken place if there had been multiple camera production, there would be a crossover between cameras. it would also be highly beneficial to use single camera production as all the producers would need to pay for is one camera, instead of paying much more for such a small video.

Analysis:
In this football advertisement made by Nike, the use of wide angle and close up connotes that there are multiple known people in this advertisement. This is beneficial as by using many well known footballers in this advertisement, many people who idolise these footballers could feel encouraged to buy the brands' products

The use of wide angle, especially at the beginning of this advertisement, is beneficial as it would show all of the pitch, highlighting all of the players on the field and that, given the knowledge of sport being portrayed as a battle, they are both aiming for victory.

The use of over the shoulder shot in this advertisement is beneficial for the audience as whenever there is an over the shoulder shot, there is always an Aperture of around
f/ 5.6- f/ 8.0, connoting that the main focus is on the stars which are on the field.

Towards the end of the advertisement, we have a close up on someone who looks at the crowd, then directly after shifts to a birds eye view of the whole crowd. The shift of close up to birds eye view symbolises how important the game is to these people. This could also represent how big of a game football is as it is now being viewed worldwide.

The use of two shot on minute 1:33 creates
a comedic effect. This is beneficial as the
main audience are aged around
15-25, meaning that they can use comedy
to their advantage.

TV Dramas:

Analysis:
In this clip of Marvels' The Punisher, the mixture of big close up and panning symbolises that the main protagonist is the focus of this shot.

It is evident that this scene uses single camera production as one of the cameras are positioned as a big close up, meaning it couldn't be multiple camera production as it would be breaking continuity.

When Frank Castle is giving his speech, the other people around him are not visible. This connotes that an aperture of around f/ 1.4 to f/ 2.0 has been used to ensure that Frank Castle is the main focus in this scene for the audience. Especially at 0:30, we see a focus pull from the listeners to the speaker, indicating to the real audience who is sharing their thoughts, it also connotes that everyone in the room is ready to listen to him.

The use of panning is beneficial as it symbolises to the audience that not only are the people who are in the room listening to Frank, but even we, as the audience, are a part of the group talk and are sympathetic with Frank

The use of the over the shoulder shot in the first 28 seconds, which differs from the rest of the clip, connotes the idea of trust and comfort.

Focal Length:

One of the most common uses for zoom lenses is to zoom in on objects that are far away. While this flexibility might seem tempting for getting close to awkward objects, there is another benefit of zoom lenses when taking portraits in front of a vast spread of scenery

Shutter Speed:

‘the amount of time that the shutter is open’. In digital photography and digital video, shutter speed is the length of time that your image sensor ‘sees’ the scene you’re attempting to capture.

Aperture:

'The opening in the lens.’ When you hit the cameras shutter release button, a hole opens up that allows your cameras image sensor to catch a glimpse of the scene you’re capturing. The aperture you set impacts the size of that hole. The larger the hole = more light enters - The smaller the hole = less light enters.

ISO:

ISO IN VIDEO/MOVING IMAGE:

In traditional (film) photography ISO was the indication of how sensitive a film was to light. It was measured in numbers (100, 200, 400, 800 etc.). The lower the number, the lower the sensitivity of the film is to the light and the finer the grain in the shots you’re taking. The higher the number the more grain/noise is created

ISO IN DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY:

In digital photography, ISO measures the sensitivity of the image sensor. The same principles apply as in film photography, with the lower the number the less sensitive your camera is to light and the finer the grain.

ISO SETTINGS AND GRAIN:

Higher numbers mean your sensor becomes more sensitive to light which allows you to use your camera in darker situations. The cost of doing so is more grain (although the more expensive the camera and lens are, the more able to you will be to use high ISO settings and still get very useable images.

Single Camera Production:

The single-camera setup, or single-camera mode of production, also known as portable single camera, is a method of filmmaking and video production. The single-camera setup originally developed during the birth of the classical Hollywood cinema in the 1910s and has remained the standard mode of production for cinema.

Advantages of single camera production
-  Cheap

-  Complete Freedom When Filming

-
Disadvantages of single camera production
-  Takes a long time to produce

-  Only get one angle at a time

-  Editing is limited

Multiple Camera Production:

Multi-camera refers to any process of filming where more than one camera is used to record footage. ... The central cameras focus on a wide shot, allowing you to see the whole location or set, the outer cameras are used for close ups on the subject, capturing the details of the action you down.
Advantages of Multiple Camera Production:
-  Quick to produce

-  Multiple angles

-  Easy to edit
Disadvantages of multiple camera production:
-  It can slow you down

-  Multiple cameras can cost more

-  Lighting is limited

Task 2: Analysis.

Documentaries:

In this documentary, I can identify that the camera shots and angles vary and that multiple camera production is mostly in use. Multiple camera production is used to show that when multiple people are speaking, it would be highly beneficial to have all cameras up and running at the same time to save time. Also, another benefit of having multiple camera production is that if something occurs rarely, you will be less likely to miss it as many cameras will be looking at it at the same time.

TV Dramas:

In this scene, we as the audience see an over the shoulder angle with a wide angle and  a mixture of medium long shot, mid shot and close up shot. I am convinced to believe that this is single camera production as if it had been multi camera production, the cameras would be in line with each other, creating problems with editing/post-production

YouTube Vlogs:

In the second half of this football vlog, we can see that it is in a point of view so it is going to be single camera production as not much money has to go into buying a camera.

Angles/Shots:

Birds Eye View:
A shot taken from directly above, looking down on to the action or a point of interest
Pokemon:
Many 8-Bit games includes Birds Eye View:
Grand Theft Auto:

High/Low Angle:

A shot taken from diagonally above/below the action or point of interest, looking down/up
High Angle Shot:
Low Angle Shot:

Canted Angle:

An unbalanced shot, where the physical camera itself is placed at an unorthodox angle
Examples of Canted Angle:
Wide Angle:
A shot taken from distance in order to frame more than two subjects at the same time
Example of Wide Angle:

Two Shot:

A shot taken at eye-level, that frames two subjects in the same place at the same time

Examples of Two Shot:

Over the Shoulder Shot:

A shot taken from behind a subjects shoulder, engaging in conversation with another
Example of Over The Shoulder Shot:

Point Of View:

A shot taken from a subjects line of sight, allowing the audience to see what the subject sees
Example of Point Of View:
Establishing Shot:
A shot taken from an extreme distance, always occurring at the start of a scene
Examples of Establishing Shot:

Movements:

Tracking:
Camera moving in or out, left or right, following a subjects movement (Dollying)
Example of Tracking Shot:
Zooming:
Camera lens moving in or out of a subject. The lens moves but the camera remains stationary
Example of Zooming Shot:
Tilting:
Camera moves up or down only, the camera remains in a stationary position
Example of Tilting Shot:
Panning:
Camera moves left or right only, the camera remains in a stationary position
Example of Panning Shot:

Learning Aim
B:

This is a rough plan of what me and my group have decided of what we should do for our Music Video:

Storyboard:

Learning Aim C:

This clip below is my part of the music video (The equilibrium) :

The clip below is the whole music video edited by me:

Evaluation:

The codes and conventions which are used in my music video are useful in portraying that the video is specified for music purposes because of the shifting of the performance to the narrative. This has been used well by me as I gave both performance and narrative a fair share and in doing so, I cut up the clips to fit in the performance which had meant that around 1/5thof the music video was based on the performance. Also another code which can be put into place is the use of the lyrics and how our crew made the lyrics link to our narrative.  This is shown in the end where the song states “you got everything that you wanted”, and we as a team thought to link it by having the female happy with another man and the main protagonist is left alone. This makes our music video much better as we as a group understood the song before we made a judgement on how we should construct our video. This then led to the music video having more meaning and a higher chance for our audience to have an understanding of the song itself.

I had used single camera techniques well as I had understood the variety of shots and angles which benefitted in the narrative as on one occasion, one of the characters weren’t present but was easily countered as instead of using her in my video, I made it so that the audience became her by using POV shots. It can be seen as evident that one of the characters weren’t present due to the point that she is only in the equilibrium around 30% of the time.

The genre of the song by NF is Hip-Hop & Rap, therefore meaning that I needed to make a music video revolving around the vibe and the genre itself, and I feel as if I have accomplished that well as the feeling that me and my group got off of the song was a bit melancholic and that we, as a group interpreted that well. One issue however with the song is that the main protagonist was not a fan of the song, resulting to the performance becoming staged as the main protagonist was not following the words in production.

I feel as if the target audience of 16-35 have been attracted well due to the genre mix of Hip-Hop and Rap. This mix of genres is very effective because Rap may attract the younger audiences and Hip-Hop may attract the older audiences. Also another reason why this may attract not only the target audience, but those who listen to NF’s songs, would feel attracted to at least one of his songs due to one of the main themes being Love, which affects many people nowadays.

In all honesty, I had hoped it would have been better but with the vast amount of errors which were occurring nearer to the day. However overall, I feel proud of what me and my crew have accomplished in this project. One of the reason why I am not too fussed about the outcome is because we had issues with some of the crew members not attending multiple shoots, this alone leaves the whole music video in jeopardy as this would then lead to a series of events which would conclude in moments of the music video being left out.
